The unexpected diagnosis
Last week, a routine blood test brought a significant change to my life: the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. This news didn't come as a complete shock, though. Six years ago, I was warned about being pre-diabetic. The advice was simple – cut back on sugary treats. Considering my infrequent indulgence in such foods, I thought it would be easy. However, without further follow-ups or support, I was left to navigate this warning on my own.
Battling genetics and other conditions
My health journey has been marked by several challenges. At 33, I was diagnosed with epilepsy, and at 36, fibromyalgia joined the list. While epilepsy is managed with medication, fibromyalgia presents a daily battle, demanding movement from a body that screams in pain at the slightest exertion. My physical condition has gradually deteriorated, leading to high cholesterol, early-stage NAFLD, and obesity. With a family history of metabolic diseases, I knew the risks were there. Still, I didn't expect them to manifest so early in my life. At 37, I often feel like I'm trapped in a much older body, struggling to keep up with its demands.
Charting a new course
Realising the need for change, I've decided to document my journey towards better health. This isn't just about managing diabetes; it's about redefining my relationship with my body and lifestyle. I'm aware that many share similar struggles, often hidden beneath a facade of normalcy. It's time to confront these challenges head-on with kindness and honesty.
Seeking support and embracing change
I've come to understand that I can't do this alone. I need guidance, both medical and non-medical, and a supportive community. My journey will include stories of weight management, but not through extreme diets or restrictions. Instead, I'll focus on developing a healthier relationship with food.
The challenge of movement
Physical activity has never been my forte, given the pain I've experienced since childhood. However, I recognise its importance in my journey. I'll be exploring various forms of exercise, starting from a very basic level, and sharing my experiences with you.
Mental health: a key component
Acknowledging the need for mental healing is crucial. Self-acceptance, compassion, and love are vital tools in this journey. I'll be sharing my thoughts and experiences in dealing with the mental impacts of my health conditions.
Sharing my story
I'm ready to share my vulnerabilities with the world. If my experiences can provide companionship or comfort to anyone else, then sharing them is worth it. I'll be updating this blog, posting on Instagram, and possibly starting a TikTok channel. In a world where health advice often feels disconnected from reality, I aim to offer a perspective grounded in real-life experiences.
Join me on this journey of health, self-discovery, and resilience. Together, we can navigate the complexities of living with chronic conditions and find strength in our shared experiences.
